Gary Shaw: Aston Villa legend in serious condition after fall

A former Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion midfielder is in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a fall.

Gary Shaw, 63, is understood to have fallen at his home in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, on Sunday evening.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international was rushed to hospital, where he is being treated for a serious head injury.

Shaw's former clubs, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion, have both sent messages of support to the player and his family.

In a statement, Aston Villa said: "The thoughts of everyone at Aston Villa are with Gary Shaw and his family at this time.

"Gary is a legend of our club and we are all praying for his recovery."

West Bromwich Albion said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the news about Gary Shaw.

"Gary is a true Albion legend and our thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time."

Shaw made over 500 appearances for Aston Villa during two spells at the club, winning the European Cup in 1982.

He also played for West Bromwich Albion, Everton, and Stoke City.

Shaw won 14 caps for the Republic of Ireland and was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 1988 European Championship.
