Japan Another Candidate Joins Race To Become Ldp President

Japan: Another candidate joins race to become LDP president

Sanae Takaichi, a conservative lawmaker, has announced her candidacy to become the next leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Takaichi, 60, is a former internal affairs minister and is known for her hawkish views on defense and foreign policy.

She is the second candidate to enter the race, following former foreign minister Fumio Kishida.

The LDP is expected to hold a leadership election on September 29 to replace Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who announced last month that he would not seek a second term.

The winner of the LDP election is virtually assured of becoming Japan's next prime minister, as the party has a majority in parliament.

Takaichi is a member of the LDP's conservative wing and is seen as a close ally of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

She has said that she wants to continue Abe's legacy of "Abenomics," which focused on economic growth and fiscal stimulus.

Takaichi has also expressed support for revising Japan's pacifist constitution and strengthening the country's defense capabilities.

She has said that she believes Japan should be able to possess nuclear weapons as a deterrent against North Korea and other threats.

Takaichi's candidacy is likely to appeal to conservative voters within the LDP and could make the race more competitive.

Kishida, who is seen as a more moderate candidate, is considered the frontrunner in the race.

However, Takaichi's entry into the race could split the conservative vote and give Kishida a tougher challenge.

The LDP leadership election is expected to be closely watched by both domestic and international observers.

The outcome of the election will have a significant impact on Japan's political landscape and its foreign policy.
